Ludwig Schuster
Ludwig Schuster, a schoolteacher in the small town of Schrobenhausen (Upper Bavaria), started putting on puppet shows in 1923. His first successes, which took him as far as Munich, led him to retire as a teacher in 1930 and found a travelling puppet theater, the Peißenberger Puppenspiele. In 1955 he took over the direction of the Marionettentheater in Bad Tölz, but gave it up the following year and closed it in 1960. He wrote fairy tales, stories, children's books and about twenty puppet plays, several of which were staged at the Marionettentheater in Munich. He was one of the puppeteers who, following the example of Max Jacob and his Hohnsteiner Puppenspielen, contributed to the 20th century transformation of the character of Kasperl by rejuvenating him and softening his asocial character to make him more childlike.
