Will Hermanns (Peter Josef Wilhelm Hermanns)

1885 – 1958

Will Hermanns first worked in the press and publishing industry in Bonn, and then in his home town of Aachen, where he eventually joined the city council in 1928. His involvement with the city's officialdom under National Socialism (he is said to have written the speeches of Aachen's mayor Quirin Jansen) led to him undergoing a denazification procedure after the war. But Hermanns is best known as a regionalist poet. In 1921, he founded the puppet theater Öcher Schängchen, for which he wrote many plays in the local dialect. The theater still exists today. In 1956, he returned to his puppet work by creating the first Verkehrskasper [Traffic Kasper] with Edgar Perseke The puppet show was aimed at raising awareness of traffic regulations.
