Pierre-Charles Josse
17.. – 17..
Very little is known about “Sieur Josse” (Sir Josse), a merchant of fans and printmaker who published L'Origine du monde et la chute du premier homme (The Origin of the world or the fall of the first man) in 1763. This small book advertised the shop of Pierre Josse, also called Josse l’Aîné (Josse the Elder), on Rue Greneta in Paris - called “À l'éventail des quatre saisons” (literally: At the fan of the four seasons). However, it was most likely written by his son Pierre-Charles Josse, who took over the family business; the notarial archives of Paris have preserved his marriage certificate, dated 1751, with Mademoiselle Madeleine Durand.
