Johann August Bille

1786 – 1864

Johann August Bille was a travelling actor of the first half of the 19th century and the first member of the Bille dynasty of Saxon puppeteers whose activities are documented, but information about him remains extremely fragmentary. The first mention of his name in the archives dates back to 1794. It is also known that in 1803, the Bille family bought a house in Saathain bei Liebenwerda, where other prominent puppeteer families resided, and which thus became the cradle of puppet theater traditions in Saxony in the 19th century.
