Edmond Rostand

1868 – 1918

The dramatist Edmond Rostand, famous for the great success of Cyrano de Bergerac (1897), L'Aiglon (1900) and Chantecler (1910), showed a lifelong attachment to puppets, which began when his uncle gave him a children's puppet theatre during a vacation in Bagnères-de-Luchon. The Villa Arnaga - Musée Edmond Rostand in Cambo-les-Bains preserves a "Théâtre Guignol" which he used to stage shows for his family and friends, as well as a collection of glove puppets and several paper theaters. His unfinished play, La Dernière nuit de Don Juan, which includes a long scene with Polichinelle, demonstrates his extensive knowledge of the traditional repertoire.
