Guido Ceronetti

1927 – 2018

Guido Ceronetti was born in Turin in 1927. He was an Italian poet, philosopher, writer, journalist, playwright and puppeteer. He collaborated with several newspapers and published philosophical and poetic works. His work as a translator, both of Latin and ancient Hebrew and of modern poetry, was remarkable. In 1968 he married Erica Tedeschi, with whom he founded the Teatro dei Sensibili in 1970, a small chamber theater for puppets. Over the years, celebrities such as Eugenio Montale, Natalia Ginzburg, Luis Buñuel and Federico Fellini attended the performances given at Ceronetti's theater. From 1985, with the performance of La Iena di San Giorgio, the Teatro dei Sensibili became public and itinerant. From 1981, Ceronetti introduced Emil M. Cioran's work to Italy; in turn, Cioran dedicated one of his Exercises in Admiration to Ceronetti. Since 1944, all of his works have been collected in the Archivio Prezzolini of the Lugano Cantonal Library in the Guido Ceronetti collection, which he jokingly called "the bottomless collection". Often criticized for his extreme positions on various subjects (vegetarianism, euthanasia, immigration), he never really became involved in political life. He died at his home in Cetona (Siena) in 2018 and was buried in the cemetery of Andezeno (Turin), his parents' hometown.
