Ludwig Koch

1806 – 1888

Franz von Pocci was not the only government official of the Bavarian king who devoted himself to writing for puppets. Dr. Ludwig Koch, a court physician, was another representative of the literary and artistic dilettantism that prevailed in Munich at that time. Koch wrote his plays for the private puppet theater of Baron Carl Wilhelm von Heideck, which was bought by Josef Leonhard Schmid in 1858 along with his entire repertoire. Like Pocci, Koch was also a musician and composer, author of Lieder and popular songs: he was close to the general director of music Franz Lachner (1803-1890), who was ousted by Ludwig II in the 1860s in favor of Richard Wagner and his supporters.
