Berta Gründler was born in 1899 in Vienna. In the 1940s she wrote stories and fiction, which she began to publish in 1947. Under the name Bertl Hayde, she wrote a large number of children's books, animated film scripts and radio plays. In 1960, she was awarded the Staatspreis für Kinderliteratur (National Prize for Children's Literature).
