Comte de Caylus (Anne-Claude-Philippe de Tubières de Grimoard de Pestels de Lévis de Caylus)

1692 – 1756

French man of letters, engraver and collector of antiquities. He is notably the author of a Recueil d'antiquités égyptiennes, étrusques, grecques et romaines in 7 volumes (1752-1767), also of fairy tales, oriental tales and erotic tales. He belonged to the group of Lazzistes who, during the winter of 1731-1732, met in Paris at the behest of the actress Jeanne-Françoise Quinault to organize private performances after a fine supper. The count of Caylus wrote some scenes of the Polichinelle lazziste and he is probably the author of the manuscript Histoire et recueil des lazzis which describes these evenings and brings together the texts of the shows.
