Gaetano Santangelo (aka Ghetanaccio)
1782 – 1832
Ghetanaccio (or Gaetanaccio) was a glove-puppeteer who performed in the streets and squares of Rome at the beginning of the 19th century. Well-known for his improvised dialogues and his cutting panache, the main characters of his plays were Pulcinella (he made his voice using a swizzle, the pivetta, as was done in Naples), Rosetta and, most importantly, Rugantino – a character typical of Roman theatre, arrogant and belligerent. Ghetanaccio was imprisoned several times for his impudence, and was forced to ask for alms after Pope Leo XII forbade his performances in 1825, because of the jubilee. He died of tuberculosis.

Ghetanaccio (Francesco Sabatini, Il volgo di Roma, 1890).
