August Franz Rokos

1871 – 1962

When he wrote his puppet play Der Schmied von Jüterbock und sein Geselle Kasper (1922), August Franz Rokos was a public prosecutor at the court in Česká Lípa (German: Böhmisch Leipa), in the region known as Sudetenland. He became president of the territorial court in Cheb (Egra) in 1933. A playwright in his spare time, he wrote several plays for adult audiences: Not im Forst [Peril in the Woods], Lorenas Liebesspiele [Lorena's Love Games], Das Liebesmahl [The Love Feast], as well as the comedy Die Küsse des Herrn Cornelius [The Kisses of Mr. Cornelius] (1942). In 1935, he staged the play Rufmord [Attack on Reputation] at the Mariánské lázně (Marienbad) theater, inspired by criminal cases that had passed through his hands as a jurist (see Emil Hruška: Souřadnice smrti: skutečný příběh z let 1928-1935, Praha, Epocha, 2021, 193-201).
