Laure Choisy
Laure Choisy, violinist with the Orchestre de Suisse Romande, music teacher and composer, met Marcelle Moynier in the early 1920s. Moynier was the granddaughter of the lawyer and diplomat Gustave Moynier, a musician in her own right, and a disciple of Émile Jaques-Dalcroze. Choisy wrote the sketches and composed the songs for a show, C'est si naturel (1921), which Marcelle Moynier performed in drag. The pair then created a cabaret-theater company, the Puceron Mauve, which performed at the Lycéum Club de Genève, a women's cultural society.
Having discovered puppets in 1929 when they saw performances of Vittorio Podrecca's Teatro dei Piccoli in Geneva, they founded the Théâtre des Petits-Tréteaux which put on its first shows in 1930. Invited by Marcel Temporal's Compagnons de la Marionnette, the Théâtre des Petits-Tréteaux represented Switzerland at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1937.
In 1941, the company headed by the two women took the name Théâtre des Marionnettes de Genève. Marcelle Moynier was the artistic director, Laure Choisy the administrator, author, composer and sound engineer, while Ingeborg Ruvina was the director.
For the Petits-Tréteaux, and later for the Théâtre de Marionnettes de Genève, Laure Choisy wrote comedies (Une visite romantique, La Place du Molard en 1830, Lully enfant prodige), sketches (Geneva-Plage, Tout comme les hommes) and adaptations (Cadichon, based on the Comtesse de Ségur; Aladin, after The Thousand and One Nights; La Princesse Zelica, after La Princesse de Carizme by Lesage; La Perruque de l'Oncle Séraphin, after La Perruque de Cassandre by Pauline Séraphin; Le Tricorne, after Pedro Antonio de Alarcón). Their texts are held in the archives of the Théâtre des Marionnettes de Genève.
Several of Laure Choisy's musical compositions have been published (including a
Petite sonate dans le genre ancien, 1932). She also published a tale for children, L'Oiseau vert, ou Jean, Jeannette et Jeannot (Paris: éditions La Bourdonnais, 1935).
