Geneva-Plage
This short sketch is part of the tradition of news reviews, with different characters making satirical comments on a topical event. It was the fourth tableau of a performance, and followed Tout comme les hommes.
In the sketch, Laure Choisy displays her “fundamental pessimism which she was hiding, despite a stern outset, under funny statements of sometimes terrifying caustic nature.” (Thierry Vernet, Marcelle Monnier et le Théâtre des Marionnettes de Genève, Genève: Théâtre des Marionnettes de Genève, 1983, p. 62). The music was composed by Laure Choisy, with the exception of one song that uses a tune by composer Raffaello Penso.
The bath
One after the other, an array of characters sing their thoughts about the plan to open a public beach on the shore of Lake Geneva (Genève-Plage, inaugurated in 1932 in Cologny, where Marcelle Monnier and Laure Choisy lived). While some praise the benefits of swimming, others ridicule the flaws of their fellow citizens.
