L'Impromptu de Polichinelle
The play was written following the destruction of the dressing rooms of the theaters of the Saint-Germain Fair, demolished to allow the construction of a new market, which led to the relocation of the Opéra-Comique company. This short play was to be followed by another play by Carolet, Le Déménagement de l'Opéra-Comique, of which we only know the first scene - it seems that its writing was interrupted. According to Françoise Rubellin, who published these two texts (Marionnettes du XVIIIe siècle, 2022), the date on the manuscript of L'Impromptu (1731) must be corrected, the relocation having taken place five years earlier.
The owner of an entertainment business finds himself with no company or author
Polichinelle discovers that the theaters have been demolished. He has ordered a carpenter to make him new puppets but has no play to perform. The author Flonflon asks to be paid in advance, and Polichinelle beats him. Then four spectators come to see Polichinelle. The Compère (stooge) advises him to present a very short play. Polichinelle announces that he has two plot ideas: the relocation of the Comédie-Italienne and the wedding of the fairy Carabosse with Polichinelle. The play ends with a dance and a farce.
