Note

The manuscript mentions no author. It is found in volume FF 9313 of the Soleinne collection, which is kept in the Département des manuscrits (manuscripts Department) in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. This short play was sung and seems to have been meant for a high society show. The reference to Lefranc and Pompignan’s tragedy, Didon, performed at the Comédie-Française as a “new play”, allows us to date the text back to 1734. But Charles Magnin (Histoire des marionnettes en Europe, 1862, p. 165) gives the date of a revival, in 1740.

Gaston Baty’s handwritten transcription is kept in the Institut International de la Marionnette (don Temporal).

Plot summary

A conversation about a recent show

Céliante and Dorimène ask the Marquis to tell them about new plays. The latter relates that the Chevalier (Knight) and his daughter Emilie, who follow him, have seen Didon. The Chevalier, Emilie and Céliante recount the play with songs.
