Note

Das Spiel von Kaspar, der Königin Tausendschön und der noch tausendmal schöneren Prinzessin Schneewittchen is one of two plays written by Fühmann in 1984 at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin while he was undergoing heavy surgeries and was just resuming writing. The author had planned to write a cycle of three puppet plays but only completed two: this one follows Das Spiel von der glücklichen Flucht des Prinzen Schaukelpferd vom Spielzeugland mit der Prinzessin Dana von Gurkistan aus der Burg des bösen Zauberers Khalakuck, and together they form a collection entitled Schlipperdibix und Klapperdibax! published posthumously a year later. The title of the collection refers to the humorous swear words of Franz von Pocci’s character, Kasperl Larifari. Many other allusions can be found in the two plays. Das Spiel von Kaspar, der Königin Tausendschön und der noch tausendmal schöneren Prinzessin Schneewittchen is first and foremost a rewriting of the famous Grimm Brothers’ “Snow White”. Fühmann took interest in the first, unpublished version of the tale, in which it was Snow White’s mother who wanted her dead and not the stepmother. It is the version chosen by the author, who presents it from a political perspective that is characteristic of his work: the criticism of power.

Plot summary

The persecuted innocence and the corruption of power

Kaspar is picking flowers in a forest for the birthday of his wife, Grete. He catches Hubertus the hunter about to murder Schneewittchen (Snow-White) following the order of Schneewittchen’s own mother, the queen Tausendschön. Kaspar convinces Hubertus to let her go and suggests to the princess that she seeks refuge at the seven dwarfs’ house. However, when the magic mirror tells the truth to the queen, the hunter denounces Kaspar and hands him over to the queen. She then tries to poison Schneewittchen twice. As she attempts it the second time, Kaspar escapes from prison and seeks refuge at the seven dwarfs' home as well. Schneewittchen passes out before his eyes, and he shakes her so much that she spits out the piece of apple that was poisoned with pesticide. Learning once again from her mirror that her daughter has survived, the queen gets so angry that she dies. Schneewittchen then takes her place on the throne and, in the final act, begins to behave as tyrannically and capriciously as her mother.
