Sorry, boys
Discussions about a secret pact for 12 severed heads
The published text includes the statement ‘Freely inspired by events that took place in Gloucester, Massachusetts’. Sorry, Boys is indeed inspired by an event that shook the small town of Massachusetts in 2008: eighteen high school girls under the age of sixteen decided to get pregnant at the same time in order to create a
female community, free from male presence, where they could raise their children together. The text aims to show that the girls' choice was dictated by a social context undermined by severe gender-based violence, experienced by the protagonists in several situations (with their boyfriends, within their own families, etc. ). To highlight this context, Cuscunà chose not to involve the protagonists of the story directly: they never speak directly, as the text explores the social environment around them and lets their boyfriends, parents and school professionals speak for them. The puppets representing them are twelve animatronic heads (remotely animated by bicycle brake cables) hung on wooden supports, like hunting trophies.
Teenage girls decide to create a community of women.
In an American high school, a group of girls decide to make a secret pact. They choose to get pregnant together, then flee their town and found a female community. When the headmaster realises what is happening, he tries to cover it up, fearing confrontation with parents and the media, but inevitably everything comes to light. The girls inform their boyfriends of their pregnancies by text message, and then they organise their escape. The parents' cries will not deter them from their intentions. On the contrary, these same cries will turn into reflections on their own faults and on the causes of this shocking pact.
