A Stranger discovers the body of a drowned young girl. Accompanied by an Old Man, he observes by a lighted window the quiet life of the family to which he has to tell the news to as as the procession carrying the drowned girl's body is getting closer.

On an island ruled by a Reine (Queen) whom no one ever sees because she lives secluded in a tower, two sisters, Ygraine et Bellangère, welcome their little brother Tintagiles. The three of them are the Reine’s grandchildren. Since she kills everyone who threatens her influence, the sisters and the old tutor Aglovale try to protect Tintagiles, who is slowly dying. When he is locked in the tower, he asks Ygraine to help him escape the room; this is in vain, as the Reine kills him there.

Guignol is riddled with debts and can no longer provide for his wife and his daughter Madelon. To get him out of trouble, his friend Grinchitoux suggests that he become an “apache” – that is, a thief – like him. Madelon begs her boyfriend Pintrus to prevent it. Grinchitoux takes Guignol to the edge of the forest, where he is asked to cause accidents and rob the travellers. When Guignol refuses, Grinchitoux threatens him with a gun. Pintrus tries to take Guignol back home, but the latter drives him off. The Baron de Pierrafeu’s car crashes. His valet Trouillard (meaning “lily-livered”) flees, and the Baron is taken inside a cave. Grinchitoux tortures him, until the Baron reveals where his money is hidden and hands him the key to his castle. The Baron is then left for dead. While Grinchitoux fails to find the money, Guignol, who was keeping watch, repents. Pintrus arrives and urges Guignol to flee, as the police is on its way – led by the Baron, who is still alive. Grinchitoux kills the valet Trouillard, then the Baron. He is apprehended by the Gendarme (policeman). Guignol is safe and alive, and he has become a perfect husband. He agrees to Madelon and Pintrus’ marriage. Grinchitoux is sentenced to death. He makes an attempt at escaping, but Guignol catches him, and he is hanged. Guignol treats the policeman and the hangman to a drink.

An elementary school teacher teaches his pupils that, in order to be a good Englishman, you have to know how to never compromise yourself and always give vague answers. A bee stings one of the pupils who swears out loud and is then told off. A bull enters galloping, driven mad by the red tie of the teacher, who maintains his composure while the children start to panic. The bull runs straight into the school and throws it into the air with all the people still inside.

The Mandarin is sad. A new year has begun, and he must negotiate again with Homme-dragon (the Man-dragon), a monster that terrorizes his kingdom. The messenger Djin-Ti offers to speak with the monster for him, even though he is even more afraid of it than the Mandarin. But negotiation is impossible: Homme-dragon asks for princess Yin, the Mandarin’s daughter, or he will eat every child in China. The Mandarin asks Roland and another knight for help, but the monster defeats them effortlessly. The Mandarin, his daughter and Djin-Ti go to Charlemagne for help. Near Liège, Djin-Ti suggests that his master and the princess rest while he speaks with the emperor. But how can he approach Charlemagne? P’tit Colas, a child from Liège, advises Djin-Ti to speak with his friend Tchantchès instead. Tchantchès devises a plan to beat the monster. He suggests that he and the Mandarin set a trap for Homme-dragon. The princess will write a letter to lure him to Liège. The plan is successful: Homme-dragon arrives in Tchantchès’ home and is defeated by him. The Mandarin does not know how to thank his saviour, but Tchantchès needs no thank-you. He invites him to “celebrate this victory and the friendship between China and good old Liège” by drinking peket – the local Jenever alcohol.

In the 17th century, inside the monastery of Santa Chiara in Udine, the sisters organised themselves to transform this cloistered place into a centre of culture and free thought. By opposing the imposed precepts and benefiting from the support of families and the city government, the small community of nuns developed a movement of resistance to patriarchy, which succeeded even in the face of the Inquisition trial. The sisters' story is intertwined with that of another example of resistance, Arcangela Tarabotti, who was forced to enter a monastery at the age of ten because of a physical defect (lameness) that made her unsuitable for marriage. Angelica became a scholar, who never ceased to recount the deprivation of freedom in her works, denouncing the mechanisms that relegated young girls without a vocation to monasteries.

In an American high school, a group of girls decide to make a secret pact. They choose to get pregnant together, then flee their town and found a female community. When the headmaster realises what is happening, he tries to cover it up, fearing confrontation with parents and the media, but inevitably everything comes to light. The girls inform their boyfriends of their pregnancies by text message, and then they organise their escape. The parents' cries will not deter them from their intentions. On the contrary, these same cries will turn into reflections on their own faults and on the causes of this shocking pact.

Joseph is in love with Mary, but she rejects his clumsy advances. Tchantchès tries in vain to help Joseph. The archangel Gabriel appears to Mary and asks her to go back on her decision. He announces that she will have son and that she will have to call him Jesus. Then Gabriel appears to Joseph and reassures him: he will not be rejected this time. Mary and Joseph leave together for Bethlehem. The journey is a long one, the due date is approaching, and Joseph is looking for a place to rest. Pierre (Peter), the owner of a restaurant, offers them to stay in the old stable behind his establishment. They gladly accept. Three Magi present themselves at Herod’s court: they have heard that the King of the Jews is born and are looking to bring him gifts. Jesus is born in the stable. Tchantchès and Nanesse congratulate the parents. The Magi bring him their presents. Later, Joseph learns about the emperor’s order – all the children under two will be killed. He is scared, but Tchantchès promises to help him. While Joseph and Mary are getting ready to flee, Tchantchès fights the knight who has come to kill Jesus and triumphs over him. Joseph and Marie leave for Egypt with their son.
