Note

This short intermezzo (Zwichenspiel) returns to the more comedic tones long favored by Pocci: those of the magnificent garden (Prinz Rosenroth und Prinzessin Lilienweiß) and of the finicky professor (Doctor Sassafras; Hansel und Grethel). The fantastical aspects of the piece turn rapidly into jokes.

Abstract

Two delinquents are punished for breaking the rules

The botanist Pomologus wants to keep his daughter Apfelsina close to him all her life in his garden. When Professor Kräutlmayer, under the pretense of visiting the garden, attempts to approach Apfelsina, Pomologus loses his temper. Despite explicit instructions not to, Casperl, the professor's servant, eats apples off a tree and grows donkey's ears. Kräutlemayer, after this mishap, does the same thing—to the same effect. Each one ridicules themselves in front of Apfelsine and Pomologus, who finish by showing them the magic fountain where they can bathe away their disgraceful deeds
