Note

The play was written by Gerd Focke after he attended a puppet theatre festival in Prague. Comparing the richness of these theatres in other Eastern European countries with the lack of inventiveness of GDR productions, the author decided to write a spectacular play, rich in transformations and comic twists. The time jumps and the on-sight transformations of the inventor’s character, played by an actor while all the other roles are taken over by puppets, allow multiple stage games. The action often borrows from burlesque cinema, with chases and accidents, as well as from comic books (one thinks of the character of Percy the Mechanical Man created by Kevin Scott Collier in 1911), but the motif of the artificial creature escaping human control also takes up the legend of the Golem.

Abstract

An artificial creature escapes human control

Felix Techno is the inventor of a time machine which he demonstrates to the audience. He gives Technikus, a robot, to his nephew Peter, but makes it malfunction to punish him for his poor performance at school and to see if Peter and his friend Kalle can control it. The deranged robot wreaks havoc on the city. Felix, who observes the events from the future, returns to take part in them under different disguises. When the robot continues its journey into space, Felix dons a spacesuit and brings it back to Earth. The inventor decides to give the robot to Kalle, who has managed to control it, because "technology belongs to the one who controls it".
