Exactly like Bruno Leone’s Pulcinella di ritorno dalla Luna or Irene Vecchia’s La Luna e Pulcinella, the play was scheduled to open in 2019 for the 36th Festival La Macchina dei sogni directed in Palermo by Mimmo Cuticchio. The edition’s subject, "L'altra faccia della Luna" (The other side of the Moon), referred to the episode of Ariosto's Orlando furioso (1516-1532), in which Astolfo goes to the Moon to look for the vial in which Roland's lost reason is locked. Pantaleo Annese's play is inspired by Ariosto's poem and uses the motif of the hero's momentary distraction.

The association of Belzebù and Death to extort the goods of the peasants is an allusion to the racket (pizzo) practiced by the Mafia.

The show is created by the Carro dei comici of Molfetta, an actor and puppet theatre company from the Bari region (Puglia).

Abstract

After giving up fighting, the hero decides to take up his weapon again

To please Teresina, Pulcinella promised never to fight again, so he threw his stick at the moon and his mask turned blue. However, the peasants' situation worsens because Pulcinella no longer defends them against the devil Belzebù, who holds them to ransom for the benefit of Death. In a dreamlike scene, various Pulcinellas pop out of Pulcinella's head and make him think. Finally, Pulcinella decides to go to the Moon, riding on the dog Chantal, to take back his stick and fight the "Red Harvester", i.e. Death.
